GHOST IN THE SHELL Ran Tests to Make Scarlett Johansson Look More Asian

Yesterday, the first photo of Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell (her character is now simply referred to as “Major”) was released. Despite a predominately Asian cast, many questioned why the studio didn’t choose an ethnically appropriate actor as the film’s lead.

After the backlash surrounding Johansson’s role in the film, producers reportedly attempted to quell the controversy with an old standby Hollywood uses to fix a lot of problems: CGI.

According to ScreenCrush's multiple independent sources close to the project, Paramount and DreamWorks commissioned visual effects tests that would’ve altered Scarlett Johansson in post-production to “shift her ethnicity” and make the Caucasian actress appear more Asian in the film.

It’s the latest, and most extreme, case of “beauty work,” the new trend in Hollywood to discreetly use visual effects to tweak an actor’s appearance, making them thinner, younger or stronger. The Ghost in the Shell tests were conducted by Lola VFX, the same company that aged up (and down) Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and is considered the industry leader in so-called beauty work. Though the tests were requested by the production team, once they were developed and reviewed, the idea was rejected “immediately,” says an insider.

Paramount Pictures who acknowledged the tests, but refute the claim that Johansson was involved: "A test was done related to a specific scene for a background actor which was ultimately discarded. Absolutely no visual effects tests were conducted on Scarlett’s character and we have no future plans to do so."

ScreenCrush's sources maintain Johansson’s character was specifically the focus of these tests, though they were done without her participation or knowledge.

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON Writer to Pen GHOST IN THE SHELL

Hot off the success of Straight Outta Compton, writer Jonathan Herman has been brought in to do an overhaul on the script for DreamWorks’ anime-based live-action thriller Ghost in the Shell.

In the film, Scarlett Johansson stars as a special ops cyborg who leads an elite task force called Section 9 for Hanka Robotics. Section 9 is devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, led by The Laughing Man, whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka’s advancements in cyber technology.

Based on Masamune Shirow’s popular Japanese comic books of the same name, the Rupert Sanders-helmed film is scheduled to go into production in New Zealand in the first part of 2016. The film is set to be released on March 31, 2017.

As with Ghost in the Shell, Herman was brought in to do an overhaul on the long-gestating Straight Outta Compton, writing the draft that got the go-ahead from Universal. The film became a surprise late-summer hit for the studio and is nearing the $200 million mark worldwide. William Wheeler and Jamie Moss wrote previous drafts of Ghost in the Shell.

GHOST IN THE SHELL Announced for April 14, 2017 Release

The Ghost in the Shell movie, which recently set Scarlett Johansson to star, will arrive in theaters on April 14, 2017 in 3D. Movement picked up on DreamWorks’ adaptation of the classic manga/anime Ghost in the Shell recently when Scarlett Johansson—apparently the only actress capable of leading female-driven action films—signed on to star.

Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders came on to helm the movie last year and one imagines he’s still attached at this point. Given Johansson’s busy schedule, it makes sense that the Ghost in the Shell movie won’t arrive for a couple more years, but I imagine filming will get underway sometime later this year. Currently the film has its April 2017 date all to itself, though it is set to arrive one week after Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2.

It's Official: Scarlett Johansson to Star GHOST IN THE SHELL

Following the success of Lucy, Scarlett Johansson looks ready to take on another action pic, this one coming from the world of Japanese anime. Johansson is set to star in DreamWorks’ adaptation of the popular anime pic Ghost in the Shell. Deadline Hollywood had reported that the actress had the offer to star but at the time she was still undecided about taking the role. Sources now say she has agreed to star in the pic.

The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime. Rupert Sanders is on board to direct. Avi Arad and Steven Paul are producing the film from a script by Bill Wheeler. Mark Sourian is exec producing. Insiders also tell Variety that Paramount has the option to come on as co-producer and financier and that decision is expected in the coming weeks.

DreamWorks principal Steven Spielberg is a huge fan of the original and has long wanted to get this film off the ground. A commitment from a star like Johansson should help in getting the pic greenlit for production. Besides Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence, Johansson is becoming one of the few actresses in town with the clout to get a project greenlit on her name alone.

Scarlett Johansson Offered Lead Role in GHOST IN THE SHELL

Scarlett Johansson has reportedly been offered in the neighborhood of $10 million to play the lead role in a live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, Deadline reports. DreamWorks had reportedly been eyeing Margot Robbie, but talks stalled and now Robbie appears close to signing on for Warner Bros.'s DC Comics adaptation Suicide Squad.

Johansson, fresh off a hit with Lucy and hugely sought-after in lead action roles at the moment, should have some time in her schedule, considering rumors that her character will play a small-to-non-existent role in Captain America 3, as opposed to the very significant role she had in The Winter Soldier.

Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White and the Huntsman, is set to direct the film, based on the wildly popular Japanese Animation of the same name. Produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul and with the backing of Steven Spielberg, the rights to Shirow's original 1989 complex futuristic thriller, about the members of a covert ops unit that takes on technology-related crime, were picked up several years ago with plans to use the latest 3D technology to film it.

Margot Robbie in Talks to Star in GHOST IN THE SHELL Movie

Margot Robbie is in early talks to star in Ghost in the Shell, which Rupert Sanders is directing for DreamWorks, multiple individuals familiar with the project told TheWrap. A live-action film based on the popular Japanese manga created by Masamune Shirow, the story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Robbie turned heads with her performance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, and Ghost in the Shell is another major role that will allow the Australian actress to showcase her action chops. Female-driven action movies such as The Hunger Games, Divergent and Lucy have all performed well at the box office.

Robbie next stars alongside Will Smith in WB's Focus and she'll soon be seen in Z For Zachariah with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine. Robbie is currently filming Tarzan with Alexander Skarsgard and Christoph Waltz.

Rupert Sanders to Direct Live-Action GHOST IN THE SHELL

DreamWorks has made a deal with Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders to direct Ghost In The Shell, a live-action film based on the Japanese manga futuristic police thriller that has a new script from William Wheeler. The film is being produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul. Fueled by the personal passion of Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks acquired the project several years ago with ambitious plans to shoot it in 3D.

Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989 by Kodansha, one of the largest publishing companies in Japan. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three videogames. DreamWorks released the second anime film. The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Sanders has several directing projects percolating, and it isn't clear which film he'll helm next. He's got 90 Church with Universal and producer Joe Roth, an epic about the bloody battles of Napoleon Bonaparte at Warner Bros, and he's developing Juliet for Sony and New Regency, as well as the screen adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth thriller The Kill List.

A lot of these anime-to-movie adaptations never make it to production. Akira, Ninja Scroll, Cowboy Bebop, Robotech, Battle Angel Alita, etc..

I didn't like Snow White too much.

GITS is one of my all time favorite movies. I can only hope it doesn't embarrass the franchise.
