Why did Askren become such a star in ONE? How did they sell him?

    I really don't understand.

The guy is supposed to be absolutely boring, according to Dana and Rebney.
He's American, not related to Indochina by any means.

Why did Asian crowd buy him? What did they see in him? How come that ONE paid him money close to their megastar Angela Lee etc?

I'd really like to know. Please explain.

He was quite boring laying and praying some better quality fighters in Bellator, but in ONE he finished all but one of his opponents.

Askren is really marketable, UFC could promote him as a bad guy really easily. He's a great trash talker and just the guy you love to hate. But he talked shit about Dana and during the time he left Bellator UFC was getting rid of boring wrestlers, so they told him to fook off...

... and taken the conditions he has in ONE by beating some dudes from SIngapore, I don't think if he ever regretted it.

Guy was just snakebitten with his career. Wrong time to be a dominant wrestler. And he ended up with that Matt Riddle / Jesse Taylor / Paul Daley type of grudge from DFW that never goes away.

    -finished guys there

-one fc markets differrent..more about martial arts than wwe

    -asian market more grapple friendly

-nice dude outside cage and that sells too , dana doesnt seem to grasp that you dont have to be sonnen/connor etc (suprising as chuck is his soul mate and he was always a cool dude)

Nothing "wrong" in what he did...he did better than ANY UFC fighter, considering all the circumstances. Retired undefeated and loaded with money?

And I don't think there was any "grudge" with either of the 4 fighters...all of them did/were something that UFC did not like...not personally Dana. Dana was just vocal about it.

Is he really loaded? For all we know he might have been the guy to give GSP the GSP treatment and then he would have made more in his next fight than he has in his whole career.

I didn't say he did anything wrong. I said he was Ben Askren at the wrong time. The UFC didn't really need a less handsome GSP and they were trying to rid themselves of anything that even vaguely reminded them of Jon Fitch.

    "
Askren will be making a guaranteed $50,000 just to show up for his first bout with ONE FC. There's another $50,000 to be awarded as a win bonus if Askren can find his hand raised.

The former Bellator champ also has an incentive clause that raises his purse should he continue his winning ways."

I really doubt that he could EVER do this money in UFC.
I'm sure he's more stable than Johny Hendricks. And probably Woodley, too.

So maybe...wrong time turned to be right time for him?

That is all nice, but just calling someone "great fighter" isn't supposed to sell immediately.

Tyron Woodley just made $500,000 in his last disclosed payout. Hendricks $100,000.

I also believe people of Southeast Asia and surrounding areas over there appreciate his handy work and see it for the true talent and domination it is.

I'm not sure how "over" he is there (Angela Lee headlined over him but I think she is their biggest star). I think they paid him just to give legitimacy to their Org. Its not often that a smaller startup Org has a chance to sign someone who could be the best in the world.

Plus their fans are probably more appreciative of the michael jordan of grappling than Americans.

He is a big fish in a small pond. Isn't that he is some huge star. For them he is a big star. Because he is the very best fighter on their roster. He could come over to the US right now and not sell out Thackerville.

They pay him more because to them he means more. In UFC he is another guy.

It is like the big name on a MLS team. They mean more to that MLS team than they would to Barcelona. So he is a star for his MLS team and that market. But if he played for that team he would be just another guy to Messi.
